The Shiplap Chronicles: What Not to Do

November 27, 2018

Happy Cyber Monday! This past weekend my dad was in town and helped me put shiplap up on my main floor mantle. Clark and I shiplapped my basement mantle a few months ago (see that post here), and it was super easy. However, my main floor was a little more difficult because I have molding and can’t frame out the shiplap the same way we did in the basement. My dad is a little more experienced in the carpentry department, so he was able to cut the wood at an angle to fit perfectly across the whole wall above the mantle! He did an amazing job and it looked great!

Goodbye Shiplap ):

My dad flew back to Texas and about an hour after he landed in Houston, I gave him call to let him know that water was trickling out of my mantle. The next few hours included me crying because I knew my shiplap would have to come down, my mom freaking out because she thought the ceiling was going to collapse, and my dad wondering what he could have hit in the wall. Well, I called the emergency plumber and the walked in on Sunday morning and I explained the situation. It took him less than 20 seconds to determine that a nail had punctured the drain pipe. He told me I had to take down the shiplap and he’d be back after his next call. When he came back, he cut a hole in the drywall and found SIX holes in the drain pipe. Luckily he was able to easily patch the punctures, and be on his way.

Look closely and you can see the 6 holes in the pipe

Now we have to patch the whole in the drywall and put the shiplap back up. I think our plan will be to use glue rather than nails on this go.

Also, if you have any tips for getting caulk off the wall, please let me know!

xx Clare

Welcome to Bluebonnet Porch! I’m Clare, a 30 year old newlywed living in Raleigh, NC with her husband and two dogs! I bought my (well, now I guess it’s our’s) house in 2020 when I was a single 25 year old and have spent the last 4 years renovating it and making it my dream house! It is a 100ish year old craftsman bungalow in Downton Raleigh, North Carolina, and I pinch myself every day that I get to live here.

I love all things home decor, DIY, food, entertaining, reading, and working out, and I can’t wait to share more about my life with y’all!
