It’s almost that time of year where houseguests are common, so it’s a good time to make sure your guest room(s) and bathroom are prepped and ready for any friends and family. I seem to always have guests staying at my house, so I’ve really gotten the hang of making my guest room as inviting as possible! It goes way beyond clean sheets and towels (but those are important too)! Here are the top 5 things I’ve done to make my guest room feel like a home away from home.
1. Extra Pillow and Blanket Options
I make my guest bed with firm pillows. However, I know not everyone likes a firm pillow, so I have a basket in the room with additional soft pillows that guests can use. This basket is also home to a fleece queen sized blanket. I feel like a good rule of thumb is to not put too many layers on a bed, but have extra layers that can easily be added if needed!
2. Water
My guest room is upstairs and my kitchen is downstairs, and to say my stairs aren’t the easiest to maneuver in the dark would be an understatement. For this reason (and just for convenience sake), I put a carafe and two clean drinking glasses on the dresser for people to help themselves to.
3. Wastebaskets
One of my pet peeves is going to a hotel that only has a trashcan in the bathroom. It makes it so much harder to keep things tidy if I don’t have an easy to access wastebasket right where I am getting ready. I keep one in every room of my house, and I think it makes a world of difference! It also helps my guests stay tidy and makes it easier for me to clean after guests leave.
4. Full Length Mirror
It is funny I put a full length mirror on this list because I love mirrors and have them all over my house but the ONLY full length mirror is located in the guest room, so I have to go upstairs anytime I need to check my whole outfit. I think it’s so important to provide this to guests for them to be able to check their outfits, but also to have additional getting ready space if you have multiple guests sharing one bathroom space.
5. Phone Chargers and Plug Outlets
My house was built in 1930 before electricity was used the way we currently do. As a result, most rooms in my house only have 1-2 plug outlets. This is less than ideal so I use extension cords and power strips to make sure guests have access to at least one plug on either side of the bed. Providing a charging pad is also a great idea in case anyone forgets a charger, and since a charging pad can work with all phone types it is more likely to suit all of your guests than a standard iPhone or Android charger.
Those are my 5 tips for making your guest bedroom more suitable for guests this holiday season. The guest bathroom is a whole different ball game, and I would love to share what products and items I see used most from my guest room if that would interest anyone!
