My basement (AKA my babe cave) has been the longest on-going transformation in my house. When I moved in, it was the home of hand-me-down and cheap furniture. Slowly over the last year and a half, I have been able to save up and purchase new furniture or receive new fixtures as gifts, and it has made a huge difference in the space!
My style throughout my house is easily categorized as “Farmhouse Style,” but since I didn’t decorate my basement right when I moved in, my style has had the chance to evolve a little. I am realizing through this whole redecorating process that I am very attracted to modern and industrial accents, so I’d say the style of my basement is more industrial modern farmhouse, which is a little different than the rest of my house.
These are the before pictures from when the previous owner was selling the house. They loved bright colors, but used the space for pretty much the same purpose I use it for. It is technically a third bedroom, but I’ve seen very few people in the neighborhood that actually use it for that purpose.
When I moved in, I brought my couch from college, a way too small rug, and my brother’s coffee table from his college apartment. I also bought the cheapest desk and entertainment stand I could find. The craft area consists of two IKEA desks, which I kept because they are so practical for their purpose.
The first renovation I made to this space was putting shiplap over the giant TV hole above the fireplace. I wrote a whole post on that here! Next I replaced the couch with a grey chaise sofa from Ashley Furniture, which I love and is so comfy!! My mom did some redecorating at her house and gave me her super nice leather ottoman from Restoration Hardware that replaced my coffee table.
My dad gave me a vintage Singer sewing machine for Christmas a few years ago, so I found this industrial shelf that I used as a TV stand to be able to display the sewing machine. I also got a similar desk from Wayfair for Christmas this year; this desk has shelves which are perfect for these woven Hobby Lobby baskets and add so much extra storage! The pink chair is from Stein Mart and was an amazing deal; I just stained the legs to match the rest of my furniture and it is perfect!!
Since this is a basement, lighting is super important. When I moved in there was a ceiling fan with shades over the lights that made the lights seem dim. There was also a boob light fixture (I have no other way to describe these) over near my current craft area, and I HATE boob lights. My mom’s realtor in Charleston actually bought this gorgeous Circa lantern light fixture for her home, but it ended up being too small, so she gave it to me and I am so grateful! It looks so much better than the boob light and gives off way more light. I also changed out the ceiling fan for this Lucca Chandelier from Pottery Barn and I am obsessed with it! My craft area is still a little dark, so I bought an iron floor lamp from Target to add more light to the farthest corner of the room. I also put a lamp on any surface I could to provide as much light to the room as possible, and it paid off, for sure.
Ths room also serves as my home gym, but more on details on that and my craft room will be in a future post!
I absolutely love how my babe cave turned out, and I love spending all of my extra time at home in this space. The dogs love it too, since they are allowed on this couch!
