Happy hump day! Christmas decorating is in full swing at my house already, and I couldn’t be happier. I love this time of year and don’t really care if I’m “forgetting” Thanksgiving because we don’t eat turkey anyways. I have so many blog post ideas that I can’t wait to share with y’all, so stay tuned and make sure you subscribe to my newsletter!
Today, I wanted to give y’all some of my tips for Christmas decorating before you actually start decorating! Being prepared will make the process so much easier and more enjoyable for you and your family.
- Scour the internet and magazines for ideas; my favorite sources are Pinterest and Instagram (@bluebonnetporch if you want to follow me). Find some pictures of trees and décor that stand out to you and that you think would look good in your home. Check out my last post for my décor inspiration this year.
- Once you have some inspiration and know what kind of theme you are going for, dig out your Christmas décor and start sorting through it. I like to have an empty bin to place anything I plan to use that year in and then I can pack everything else up and put it away until next year. The more you can find in your current selection of décor, the more money you will save and the less new pieces you will need to buy.
A few staples that I bought years ago and continue to use are my faux tree (even though I also use a real tree), white lights, plain garland, and a variety of colors of ball ornaments. You can buy large packs of Christmas ball ornaments at Target, Walmart, At Home, etc. for super good prices. I also usually have a room with a very traditional Red and Green theme, so I can use a lot of my décor year after year, but make it different by switching out a few accents here and there. - My next tip is to visualize and measure your space. Decide where you are going to put your tree first, as this will be the focal point of your décor. Measure the area and decide how big of tree your space can handle. Next, look at the other areas of your space and decide what needs décor and use your inspiration from step one to decide what you want to do. I always go all out to decorate my tree and mantle, then just add little accents to other areas of my house. I don’t want to do too much, but decorating a shelf or corner can add just enough to spice up the room.
- Start buying your decor early! I always recommend buying your decor in early November, even if you don’t decorate until after Thanksgiving. A lot of the good things are gone by the time Black Friday rolls around and you don’t want to miss out. I already noticed that Walmart is selling out of their faux trees (which they have some great priced, beautiful flocked trees this year), and Target always sells out of their most popular decor well before Thanksgiving. I know some people hate doing anything Christmas related before Thanksgiving, but sometimes you gotta risk it for the biscuit (was that the right phrase?)
- My final tip is to not stress, and just let your decor come together. Remember, your decorations aren’t what make Christmas special, so don’t fret if you can’t find the perfect rose gold Santa Claus to put on your entryway table. Enjoy time with your family and friends (and eggnog if you need a little help unwinding).
I hope these tips help at least one person plan their Christmas decor!
