Hi y’all! One of the very random hobbies I’ve gotten into this year has been plants. I am planning a separate post about all of my indoor plants and how I care for them, but today I wanted to share my outdoor plants.
I have never had a green thumb, if anything I’ve had a black thumb. However, I started learning more about plants from lots of influencers on Instagram, and my interest was sparked. Last year I planted some herbs, but they ended up drowning due to poor drainage in their pot, so that was not a good start to my plant lady journey.
This year I drilled extra holes in my planters and started talking about plants with my neighbor a ton. She has gorgeous plants all over her property, so I knew she’d be a good person to go to for help.
The Herbs
I have two planters that hang on the side of my porch with two basil plants, oregano, and chives. The chives spot was originally taken by cilantro, but the rain in Raleigh proved to be too much for them. The oregano was great for the first part of Spring, but has lately started to struggle. However, I was able to harvest a bunch of it and freeze it for future use! The chives are doing well, but I honestly never use them. Then there’s the basil. I’ve been so impressed with these basil plants. They tripled in size in the first 2 weeks and have been going great since. I’ve made 2 batches of pesto and also froze a lot for future use as well!
The Veggies
My neighbor (the one with pretty plants) gave me a tomato plant that sprouted up from some seeds she threw into the ground last year. I currently have 5 blooms, but no tomatoes yet. I’m hoping for tomatoes, but if nothing grows this year, that’s fine since it was a free plant.
I also have a jalepano plant, which is doing great. I have 2 very tiny peppers forming, but the plant has also become home to a family of praying mantises. I can’t wait to have a fresh jalepano to make salsa with!!
The Flowers
So a few days ago I decided I wanted to plant hydrangeas by my back patio. My neighbor has 2 hydrangeas bushes in between our houses and they look amazing! I went to the store today and bought two plants and put them now. I used the tiniest shovel ever so it took me well over an hour, but I really hope they survive! I’ll keep y’all updated on my newest babies.
Through the process of planting these hydrangeas, I noticed my dog loves to be on this basement porch, so I’m going to make it a project to make it nice and enjoyable so the two of us can sit out here and enjoy the weather together.
What are y’alls tips for landscaping or gardening? I’m still learning and really have no clue what I’m doing.
