I hope everyone enjoyed their long weekend. My dad came to visit, which was unexpected, but very appreciated. We took advantage of the weekend and he helped me get a ton of stuff done around my house. One of those tasks was putting up floating shelves in my dining room. This is something I’ve been thinking about doing for a while because I wanted a place to be able to display my “pretty” cookbooks.
I bought the shelves from Home Depot because they had pretty good reviews and were the correct length (36″). However, I really wanted matte black shelves and just could not find them, so I painted these. They were super easy to paint; I just lightly sanded them then sprayed two coats of this spray paint in the color poppy seed.
The shelves came with all of the brackets and hardware, but we quickly realized after hanging them that this wouldn’t be enough to hold the weight of what I wanted to put on the shelves. My dad got creative and placed a thin piece of wood behind the shelves. This piece of wood was drilled into the studs in the wall, which created a stronger anchor for the shelves, and they have held up great over the last few days.
The fun part of these shelves was styling them. I like to work with the “odd number” rule, so I found the 3 white canisters at Hobby Lobby on clearance (I found similar ones here and here). On the top shelf, I mainly wanted to display my cookbooks, so I flanked them with a golden pothos plant and another small ceramic container I bought at a shop in Charleston. The print is also from Hobby Lobby, and I felt it was very fitting for the dining room.
I absolutely love how these shelves turned out, and I am considering adding floating shelves in a few other rooms of my house, so stayed tuned for that! As always, make sure you subscribe to my newsletter, so you never miss a post!
