I used to be scared to mix metals in one room. I thought if one thing was silver, everything had to be silver, and it really limited how I could decorate. After following so many people in the home decor community, I’ve learned that you can use multiple metals in a room and it still look great and cohesive! I put it in practice in my bedroom where I have brass and black iron accents all over! Here are my 5 tips for mixing metals:

- Stick to a maximum of 2-3 metals! Any more than 3 will look too messy. I chose black iron and brass/gold in my bedroom.
- Mix dark and light metals to create contrast. The differentiation of warm and cool toned metals will give the room more interest!
- Make sure each metal you use has at least 2 pieces in the room to tie it together. For example, I have a brass planter on my dress, brass in my bedside sconces, and gold accessories on my nightstands.
- Pick a dominant metal to anchor the room and add the other metals as accent. My dominant metal is black iron, which is one the bed, mirror, and bedside sconces.
- If you are nervous about the metals not looking good together, find a piece that has both metals on it. My sconces are black iron with brass on them, so they were the perfect piece to help tie everything together. A piece like makes a great starting point for the rest of your decor.
I love the look of mixing metals and am now branching out more in the rest of my house! I love not feeling like I have to be married to one finish forever, and since spray paint exists, it’s easy to add different finishes to your room while staying on budget.
